Today the kids and I are branching out from the usual daily school books of math, science and writing – and are instead starting a unit study of Lewis & Clark (we got to see some landmarks on the way to Idaho last summer, and know enough to get by). We also played some money exchange games. Maybe no one else does it anymore, but my kids are going to know how to count back.
I’ve also been working on the website, updating with 2011 prices and availability – and new projects! It won’t be published for a couple more days, as I do a little more tweaking, but the project is officially started!
Thought I’d share a blip from yesterdays email out to our farms e-list:
After 5 days of below-freezing temperatures, last night it started thawing. The sound of dripping water from my roof was pretty exciting! It rained much of the night, and this morning was good enough that Scott didn’t have to chain up on his way to work. But just as quickly as we thought it’d be done, the flakes started falling again! It’s looking like I’m going to have to reschedule my rescheduled appointments for the day, and bask in a few more days at home.
We have been getting a lot done around (inside, mainly) the house! Updated the blog, DCF Facebook page, and got some office work in order. Our seed-starting set up has been positioned and awaits soil. We’ll start a few cole crops this week, then possible tomatoes and peppers next! With snow on the ground, it’s hard to believe it’s nearing time — but snow in February means a great warm summer for food growing — at least that’s my plan!
We also added rabbits to the farm this week! We’ve talked for years about raising rabbits for meat, but didn’t know if we’d be able to follow through with the harvesting. We’re still not sure, so we’re starting small, likely only to harvest a couple dozen in 2011. We brought home 3 beauties yesterday (chained up for the trip!), and are enjoying their company. These will be our breeders, and so can be coddled thoroughly.
So, with the snow falling still, and not wanting to get your hopes again, and to keep everyone off of the roads, I think we should just hold off on deliveries until Thursday, our normal delivery day. I do apologize for leaving your fridge less-than-full, and will have LOTS of extra for Thursday eve (our chickens are laying like mad).
We and the other farmers that participate in deliveries appreciate the support that you give us, especially after a week off from farm income.
Plan on seeing an email from me tomorrow eve with all that you can order for Thursday eve’s deliveries! And CSA’ers, plan on an abundance of delicious, yellow-yolked eggs and hard cheeses! Soon we’ll have soft cheese and feta again – lots of baby goats have been born on the farm in the past two weeks – milk is flowing again!
After a week of a white wonderland, we can see the ground! Today it has been melting quickly, with huge masses of snow dumping off of our roof. It’s providing quite a bit of entertainment!
